Dr Hooi Lai Seong completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, UK and then MBBChir (Cambridge UK) in 1982. She practiced nephrology and medicine at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Malaysia for 34 years, becoming Head of Department of Medicine and then National Head of Nephrology Service for the Ministry of Health. She retired from this position in 2018. She was the President of the Malaysian Society of Nephrology 2004 – 2006. She had coordinated many multinational trials in Malaysia including SHARP (2002), FAVOURED (2008), IMPROVE-CKD (2015), TESTING (2017), EMPA-KIDNEY (2018), ACHIEVE (2018), VALID (2019), and EASi-KIDNEY (2023). Within Malaysia she had taken part in three CAPD RCTs, an MMF RCT for lupus nephritis, 2 costeffectiveness studies on dialysis and 2 population studies on the prevalence of CKD. She has more than 70 publications. She was the editor of the National Transplant Registry for the first 12 reports and is a life member of the Malaysian Society of Transplantation. She was the scientific chairperson of the 17th Congress of Asian Society of Transplantation held in Malaysia in July 2021 and Scientific Program Deputy Chair of the World Congress of Nephrology held in Kuala Lumpur in February 2022. She serves on the editorial board of Transplantation Proceedings (from 2023). Her current activities include being the editor of the Malaysian Dialysis and Transplant Registry (since 2022).
