Dr Zulfitri is an academician-dietitian, currently serve as an associate professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He is deeply committed to advancing the role of dietitians in nephrology practices and is recognised for his contributions in renal nutrition in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia through academic teaching, research, networking and capacity building for dietitians. Dr Zulfitri’s research focuses on multi-faceted nutritional intervention for advanced chronic kidney diseases (CKD) patients in view of heightened inflammation and the prevalent issue of protein energy wasting (PEW) in this population. His work extends into the realm of digital dietetics as he strives to promote self-efficacy among his patients while also exploring metabolomics approach to understand metabolic alterations associated with PEW. This line of research aims to identify potential biomarkers of PEW and assess the impact of nutritional interventions on metabolites profiles. Some of his current research activities include a multi-centres clinical trial on palm tocotrienols that involving dialysis centres in Malaysia, Bangladesh, India and the United States of America. In addition to his research commitments, Dr Zulfitri actively serves as the honorary treasurer for Malaysian Dietitians’ Association (MDA) and is a council member of the Malaysian Society of Body Composition (MSBC).
